Dear David,

When creating a page of IPDS formatted data, the OS/400 operating system can
make extensive use of logical pages depending upon the requirements of the
application generating the data stream. An OS/400 IPDS logical page
describes an area where a single data type resides. Logical page areas are
allowed to be stacked on top of one another or to overlap as part of the
creation of a complex document. The sense code X'041100' means that some of
the data in the bar code logical page described by the system didn't fit
within the defined logical page area or the logical page did not fit
correctly on the physical media.

Since the IBM 6400 printers use a resolution of 144 dpi (as compared to 240,
300, or 600 dpi of an IPDS laser printer), the bar code produced can be a
little bigger as compared to a laser printer and sometimes this small
difference in size is enough to trip the X'041100' sense code.

Subject: IPDS printer problem

We're having a bit of an issue with a pair of IBM 6400 printers with the
IPDS feature. Both printers are configured on the AS/400 as *IPDS printers
with AFP(*YES). We have a simple work order sheet which includes two
barcodes, both in Code 39 (3 of 9) format, with device type *AFPDS. Since
putting on V4R4 in February, these printers refuse to print the work order
sheets - they were fine on V4R2. In the writer job logs, we get messages
PQT3630, PQT3667, and PQT3073, then the spool file is put back on hold. We
have PSF/400 installed (5769SS1 option 38), and the license information for
feature 5112 (1 - 20 IPM Printer Support) has been entered. The sense data
on the PQT3630 message is X'041100' - I've been trying to get hold of one of
the printer manuals to look that up, but the printers are 30 miles away and
I haven't located a manual yet. The PQT3667 message ("Bar Code
Specification Check exception at printer IBM6400.") suggests that there's
something wrong with the bar codes, but they print fine on HP LaserJets with
Host Print Transform so I don't believe there's anything wrong with the
print file DDS. I'm downloading SF97440 to scan it for IPDS and AFPDS PTF's
that we don't have. We're on cume C0049440, and all the applicable Group
PTF packages were current as of 3/28 - I've ordered the new cume and new
group packages for installation this Sunday.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of things to look at? Thanks!
