The only way I can think of to avoid having to have separate external IP addresses would be to require a different port number for each subdomain. This is assuming that the router can handle sending stuff to different port numbers on the same external IP address to different internal addresses. If it can't, you can throw a server between the router and the AS/400 that can handle it. The downside is, of course, that all of the subdomains except one is going to have a non-standard port number, requiring the users to specify the proper port number in the browser.
