They are making money selling me something I don't really need or want (for
now at least). I think I should have the choice to pay for what I want and
not to be force to pay for something when I don't need it.

This sound a lot like a Gates move. Is IBM on an learning curve? :)

Emilio,

The other thing to consider is what the AS/400 gets compared to or competes
with
on the green screen side of applications......

Green screen - mainframe, Unix with TPM

C/S - NT/Wintel, Unix

Now I'm sure there are plenty of circumstances where this pricing model
doesn't
work but the intent is to allow the AS/400 to compete as well as allow IBM
to
make money where they can because you are a captive audience....it just
depends
on your point of view, doesn't it?

Hi everybody,
I was checking prices for an AS/400 with my configurator, and it seems that
IBM is trying to kill Green screen applications on the AS/400. Why do I
think that? Check out the prices by CPW on an AS/400 720, Processor 2062 -
420CPW Batch & 1503 - 240 CPW.

According the prices on my configurator, I found this:

9406 - 720 AS400 e Server
US$ 27000
2062 Model 720 Processor (256 Mb) 420 CPW US$ 20000
                    Total
US$ 47000
                    CPW Value
US$ 111.90

1503 Interactive Card (240 CPW)
US$ 155000
                   CPW Value
US$ 645.83

This is almost 6 times the CPW value between Interactive and Batch.

So, I'm already thinking about changing all my applications to C/S and run
everything in Batch. No more Green Screen.

What do you think about it?
