Tom Peters' position has always been that product excellence will prevail.
He speaks of the impassioned and the product champion, yes, but only as
they relate to excellence. His book "In Search of Excellence"
demonstrates that position.

Additionally, he and many others speak of the Internet as being a major
change in the world and of course it is. What bothers me though is that
there is no way that I will compare the impact of the Internet with, say,
the electric light bulb, radio, telephones, heavier than air flight, space
travel, x-rays, penicillin, or the automobile.
The whole point of this post is that when all is said and done, a lot more
will have been said than done. Business will use the Internet, but the
internet will just be another interactive medium, like telephones, CB
Radios, mail, and FAX. In the end, the AS/400 will still be there and
people will still be expounding on the death of RPG.

I do agree with those asking for a Champion though. IBM had that with
Watson, but since then they have pretty well gabardined their top
management. Dr Frank Soltis has the personality for the task but hasn't
the power, nor is he anywhere near peculiar enough. He'd better get more
publicity for his car and truck modifications. :)

Booth,

I take it you don't think Gates is wacky? Or do you think he's not
passionate?

I've heard stories about him which, if true, definitely indicate that he's
one
weird character. And some of the interviews I've seen with him sure
seemed
passionate at the time...
