GM was all set to introduce a Wankel in '75 in the Monza. When the '73 oil embargo hit, they rapidly back-pedaled and put that boat-anchor 262 C.I. small block in it. The transmission hump in the Monza was much taller than the Vega's because of the need to accommodate power coming out of the center of the engine rather than the bottom. Ford bought its original big chunk of Mazda to secure access to Mazda's rotary engine expertise and possible sourcing of power plants. NSU was the darling of the German enthusiast press because of their early lead in Wankel production (remember the Ro80?). Chrysler and a number of European companies (Daimler-Benz, for example) were scrambling to get into NSU's good graces and/or develop Wankels of their own. Toyota and Nissan both had Wankel projects aimed at getting engines into production by '77. Even light aircraft and boat engine manufacturers were looking into the technology, because of the power to weight advantages. Those of us privileged to own a Mazda Rx owned a piece of what the world could have been like, had Anwar Sadat not taken his carefully calculated risk. > -----Original Message----- > From: Bale, Dan [mailto:DBale@TFSA.Textron.com] > Sent: Monday, March 20, 2000 6:20 PM > To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' > Subject: RE: Tipton's COMMON opening speech > > > Eh? > > -----Original Message----- > From: Shaw, David [mailto:dshaw@spartan.com] > Sent: Monday, March 20, 2000 4:12 PM > To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' > Subject: RE: Tipton's COMMON opening speech > > > If it hadn't been for the '73 Arab/Israeli war, they would > have taken over > the > world... > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Schenck, Don [mailto:Don.Schenck@WL.com] > > > > This from a guy who drove a ROTARY-engined car. > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Shaw, David [mailto:dshaw@spartan.com] > > Sent: March 20, 2000 1:49 PM > > To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' > > Subject: RE: Tipton's COMMON opening speech > > > > > > You wanna know the scary part?
