GM was all set to introduce a Wankel in '75 in the Monza. When the '73 oil
embargo hit, they rapidly back-pedaled and put that boat-anchor 262 C.I.
small
block in it. The transmission hump in the Monza was much taller than the
Vega's
because of the need to accommodate power coming out of the center of the
engine
rather than the bottom. Ford bought its original big chunk of Mazda to
secure
access to Mazda's rotary engine expertise and possible sourcing of power
plants.
