The coolest application I ever wrote had some pretty ugly code in it. It was a
special-purpose incremental Material Requirements Planning add-on to MAPICS I on
the /38. We built large, expensive production line testers for printed circuit
boards. We normally quoted 60 to 90 day lead-times for shipment, but many of
our components had lead-times of six months or more, so we maintained forecast
configurations in our planned production. The application I wrote would, at the
time we got an actual customer order, check the planned availability of all the
components so that we could immediately order any that we hadn't forecast,
expedite any that weren't arriving soon enough, and ultimately allow us to give
the customer a firm promised ship date. At the time I wrote it, it was still
less than a year since I had metamorphosed from user to programmer, so it was a
big deal to me at the time - something actually REALLY useful.
