Beyond obtuse language syntax, you could also use

    x = x + 1

Simple. Clean. No C in column 6. No Eval. No nothing but exactly what you
intended.

When the language syntax gets too convoluted you get in trouble! If you want
a shorthand for incrementing values, you could lobby for C/Java's "++."
Great in expressions. But be careful!

What's the difference between?
    x++
    ++x
