I have to agree with the venders on this list.  I had the need for
interfacing our transaction processing system to an outside vender via
tcp/ip.  Our system is based on data queues and I needed a socket client.
My search of the web turned up one vender.  The cost for their product x 3
was more than management wanted to spend.  Many people help me to write my
own socket client to connect to my venders server.  I also received info for
a couple of other packages out there.  I was able to SHINE because of this
list.  I gave management multiple choices of socket client/server packages
that could be interfaced with our data queue system.

Before that project was half done, A new business partner wanted to connect
to us via tcp/ip.  Again this list help me to write my own socket server.
While I wrote it my self, I was able to give management the ability to make
an informed decision on whether to write or buy.  We decided to write
opposed to buying for we have 3 AS400 that would need licenses.
