Believe it or not, the design point for the System/38 was no tape!

Most of the components that were introduced on the System/34 were designed 
for the System/38, but it took longer to complete CPF than had been 
anticipated.

Specifically the diskette drive with magazines, the 5250 architecture and 
the 62PC were all designed for the System/38.
