A bit presumptive of you, so I'll give you three:

1.  This list is international in scope.  Our overseas friends not only 
sometimes do not have the latest technology (thanks to US laws regarding 
encryption export), but oftentimes have to pay for mail like we do long 
distance service and would rather not receive the extra formatting characters 
even if they _CAN_ read it.

2.  "Stupid" mailers like cc:Mail and Notes can't handle it.  AOL has gotten 
much better, but even I still get the <bigger> <bigger> <bigger> <bold> 
<param> junk from time to time.

3.  It takes more space than text, and when I'm reading 400 e-mails a day on 
my laptop, _I'D_ rather not have HTML >8(.

It's a question of politeness, not technology.  On a mailing list like this, 
nobody really _cares_ how creative you are at formatting your text...
