This is all interesting.

A friend of mine was offered a job to "run" their web site, but they
couldn't agree to terms. Sad, because he would have NEVER done something
like that.

I bet he's glad he didn't get that job (although I do remember him being
pretty depressed at the time).

1.  A _REPUTABLE_ organization wouldn't even _CONSIDER_ accepting these 
orders, especially given what Search/400 is supposed to do.

The /400 Group just lost any shot at ESC business.  Pardon my French, but 
byte me...
