Like Lou, my recollection is that it was not *that* bad.  At the time
I worked for a business partner that got a B10 with 4MB main storage
and 945MB disk (all three disks!) in about Sep-Oct '88.

I certainly don't remember ever having problems IPL'ing reliably.  It
did improve quite a bit when bumped to 8MB.  But during that early
period the machine was not used real heavily for production work.
Compiles did take awhile, but we were used to that. :(

It could also be our perception of slow was warped because we had so
many customers with 5364's (shudder!) and other speed demons.
