Bob-
        We went through this dilemma also-started at 30, went to 50,
then 70, and now it's at 129 (where that length came from, I don't
know).  Given this, I would probably opt for a variable length field if
we ere going to revise this again.

        Looking at RFC821 (SMTP), it looks like the maximum email path
length is 256
        characters.  There may be other RFCs that apply, but I'd start
there.
