I say try the service pack.  Most of my problems with anti-virus software
have been on the install.  Installation routines (including most microsoft
products) often monkey with areas that anti-virus software thinks they have
no business touching.  I'll bet that the PC won't shut down properly without
the service pack anyway.  I've never installed any release of CA without
having to apply the most current service pack to get the PC to shut down
properly.
