The translators actually do more than that.  In the case of Premenos, it is
a document management system.  You can drill down into the data to find
documents that you have either sent or received.  It also will show the
relationship between how the data looked in your interface file and the
actually EDI data.  A very important part of the translator is to generate
and reconcile functional acknowledgements.  These small transaction sets
provide the accountability and control.  This is one reason why EDI over the
Internet can be accomplished.  If you are reconciling your FAs and someone
does not send you one, then you KNOW you need to resend the documents.  The
translator are more than data reformaters.
