Booth, For a threaded e-mail type of note, the notes record would have a unique id number and a "refers to" id number. Original notes would have blanks/zeros/null in the "refers to". I would have two logicals to this file, those without and those with a "refers to". As you process the notes file, you would start with the entries without a "refers to" value. For each entry processed, you would enter a loop to display the subordinate notes associated with the original. Naturally, each subordinate note could have it's own set of subordinates, and so on. Recursion comes in handy. For assigning unique id numbers, any number of techniques could work. I prefer all actual writes to be done via a data queue driven job. The display program submits to the queue and the queue job assigns the number and does the write. HTH James W.
