TN5250E is a specification that extends the traditional TN5250 (telnet) terminal emulation specification for TCP/IP. IBM (late to the TCP/IP game) hung on to micro-channel PC's, token ring, OS2, and SNA for far too long. It has not even been a year that AS400 users have been able to name their own device over TCP/IP having to live with randomly named telnet devices (QPADEVnnnn) which made for an unusable system. TN5250e(xtended) added some much needed functionality for TCP/IP users on the AS/400: New security and automation enablement has been added to the AS/400 Telnet server including exit program support, virtual device selection, printer passthrough, session reconnect support, expanded national language flexibility, and optional bypass of the sign-on panel. For laymen it means we can now name our display and printer devices; print using a named device (including more printer controls as compared to the limited LPR/LPD support), and have an automatic signon. Coming in V4R4 will be SSL (secured socket layer) support (yes, we will telnet over the internet someday ma). Disappearing now will be the Windows based clients that are based solely on SNA typically using the the clumsy, hungry NSRouter. Bye bye. Appearing are robust TN5250e clients boasting all you ever had over SNA but with less overhead and fewer hassles (yes, I do know the dif between less and few). There are many TN525e clients on the market today from shareware (http:// www.mochasoft.dk) to first party (I like Synapse NetWolf (http:// www.synapse.com) to IBM Express CA/400 ((http:// www.ibm.com). Demos are generally available from the net.
