I would not recommend SAVSTG because you have to restore to the exact same hardware setup. This could be a pinch in a fire. Is there a manual lying around with a title close to 'Backup and Recovery Guide'? I am trying to remember back to the dark ages, but does your version allow you to do the following: GO SAVE Option 21 - Entire system If not then use the following commands after you kick everyone off and stop all processes: ENDSBS *ALL *IMMED wait 10-15 minutes. SAVSYS prompt... SAVLIB *NONSYS SAVDLO DLO(*ALL) FLR(*ANY) Sometimes IBM gives you test tapes. These have a shorter tape length to make speedier tape retensions. Don't use these for backups. Use the INZTAP command to initialize enough tapes to back your system up. If the IBM labeled tapes are cum PTF tapes, and you have several versions, then you should be safe in using the older versions of the tapes. With the way we stay current on PTF's we have racks of these old tapes that we reuse. See if your version supports the RSTLIB option on the RSTLIB command. This will allow you to restore a library to a different name. With your machine, I'd recommend a really small library. Another test would be to CRTLIB MYTEST CRTDUPOBJ OBJ(oldfile) FROMLIB(oldlibrary) OBJTYPE(*FILE) TOLIB(MYTEST) NEWOBJ(MYFILE) DATA(*YES) SAVOBJ... of the new object RSTOBJ... of the new object Good luck. scoulshaw@aimtronics.com on 04/12/99 04:01:51 PM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet To: midrange-l@midrange.com@Internet cc: Subject: Backup Info needed I have here an AS/400 9404 B10 with an ancient version of the operating system (V2R1M0) running MAPICS. I have suspected for some time that the 'backup' procedure that I have instructions for doesn't actually do a complete backup, but backs up the master files only (I use the Cross Application Support program to do this). I would like to do a COMPLETE system backup, including the operating system, configuration, etc. Would I use the SAVSTG command to do this? I have 3 disk drives - 2 type 6100 and 1 type 6105 (Total 950MB capacity). They are 70% used. I have 1 tape drive - the tapes it uses are type DC 6150 of 120MB capacity. I have determined from this that I'll need 7 tapes to do the job - Any idea how long this might take? There are assorted tapes lying around here, most have IBM type labels on them and I'll leave them alone, but there are some that look like they were purchased blank. There is minimal labeling on these so I'd like to find out what is on these tapes before I use them. Is there a command that will read a tape and give me a directory of its contents? Can I direct the output of this command to a print file? Is it possible to run a test restoration without overwriting the system? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
