We are running Domino on an AS/400, (actually a few of them). We like them a
lot
You do not need Client Access to run Notes on your PC workstations. However,
if
you are looking at removing the twinax terminals and replacing them with the
PC's
then I would recommend the Client Access Express to do 5250 emulation.
We have some users using Network Stations accessing Notes and 5250 sessions.
They
are using the NC Navigator browser to access Notes. You have to apply a
different
template for their mail database. We've not upgraded to R5 yet. IBM is
getting
better on supporting Network stations.
http://www.ibm.com/java/community/story-dekko.html

There are numerous ways to get the data from the 400 into Notes. We hope to
get one
of them working before I die. The documentation is so poor that it must be
intuitively
easy once you do it the first time.

I don't know as if I would call Notes a word processor. I use OV/400 and MS
Word
for my word processing.

You will lose the twinax. Replace it with either Token Ring or Ethernet.

We've set up clustering, partitioning and replication and what not. Clustering
is cool.
Replicate a database on two 400's and drop one. The user automatically gets
routed to
the backup with all the data up to the second and hardly a blip. Can also be
used as a
backup tool to leave your servers running 24x7.

Closely look at support. Evaluate all options. Negotiate if you have to. It
took over
a year but we finally got 24x7 unlimited access that doesn't cost the
ridiculous amounts
they first wanted. I've yet to call in an incident on the new contract. I'll
tell you,
IBM AS/400 support is MUCH better. With Notes if you open up an incident with
an
individual and they go out of town, you'll play heck trying to get someone else
to
back them up.

Check out their websites. Starting out with http://notes.net
 I especially like:
http://notes.net/46dom.nsf?OpenDatabase
Instead of the mailing list concept they use discussion databases. I find this
easier
to browse. You can search for 400, or berendt. There were some search
anomalies they
were supposed to be working on.

Subject: domino on AS400

We have just installed a new 720 with V4R3.
We have all twinax attached green screens.
Now we are charged with putting everyone on a network with email and we
need a new word processor.
Our choice: Domino with Lotus Notes.
Our question: Is anyone running it native on AS400? How is it? How do you
get the emulation? Do you need client access? How do you get data from as400
file into Notes documents (LEI,Notes pump)? If so do you need client access?
If we do need client access why not express client?

We have a notes/domino/network vendor who is recommending client access. All
the books and stuff we read makes no mention of client access.
