Why couldn't you use WINZIP or PKZIP to zip your IFS data?  You could write some very short routines on the AS/400, in RPGIV even if you wanted, to handle the passing of the data to Winzip or Pkzip. Both of these PC utilities accept command line parameters, so it wouldn't be a big deal to pass IFS files to them.

My feeling is that if you see a need for something, and it is possible for you to create it yourself, then just do it. If you wait for IBM to get around to it, for a lot of reasons, you may be waiting a long time.  Besides, if you do it yourself, maybe you'll come up with a marketable product that will turn you into the next Bill Gates, although hopefully with a better hair cut.

When do you thing IBM will supply a native zip engine that will allow the ability to compress files on the IFS in zip format.  This is a needed component when trying to give file data to customers accessing information from the web server.  I cannot believe they have not ported this capability yet.  It would be nice to send report data from regular programs to the ifs and zip it with CL commands.
