Thanks Carsten!  That is the answer that will work best for me.   
 Somewhere along the way I missed the 'chgbckup' command (which as near   
as I can tell only gets you that one little extra exit program option).   
 Thanks to everyone else who responded.  All were good answers ... but   
this solution avoids my having to modify existing command defaults or   
library lists, etc. which is what I so desperately wanted to avoid.  Now   
all we need is to get IBM to add an end of tape operation option in   
chgbckup so as to avoid work-arounds like this.  Thanks again!
