Carl, The trick we use is to create a small PF that has the date in several formats, MMDDYY, YYMMDD, CCYYMMDD, Month DD YYYY, etc, and included our fiscal month and year. Populate the file with several years worth of data with a simple RPG program. Then in the query you can now include this file and pick any format you want. It also helped select records for a particular fiscal period.
