David,

I am NOT responding to your rumor insight request, but I am wondering
why you or your boss would care. Back in 1994 IBM announced a new AS/400
that did not support OPM RPG, ILE RPG, PL/I, or OS/400 for that matter;
its name was AS/400 Advanced/36 (also known as 9402-236). And for purely
marketing reasons IBM has provided "reduced function" systems in certain
parts of the world in order to meet specific export requirements. If
someone within IBM were to determine that IBM could sell oodles (I don't
believe I have ever used that technical term on the web before...) of
AS/400s (that would not have been sold otherwise) by doing a reduced
function version of the system then I would be all for it (as would any
AS/400 user I would hope).

And so long as the "core" AS/400s continued to support RPG, PL/I, COBOL,
C, OS/400, etc. I'm not sure I would really care.  For sure I wouldn't
lose any sleep over it.

Bruce Vining (as usual speaking only for myself as a fan/user of AS/400)
