Apple released a DAL Server for the AS/400 in 1992 (with assistance
from IBM, as part of the Apple-IBM Alliance), and even before that,
one could do client-server to the AS/400 with SequeLink from
TechGnosis (now owned by INTERSOLV) - I remember setting up a demo
of SequeLink in early 1992 (Mac to AS/400 with the DAL API, though I believe
that they also supported Windows (or DOS?) clients and also had a
proprietary API - this is all pre-ODBC).
