We have a Netopia Farallon router, provided by our ISP, which is assigned a static IP address. It can be configured to export services and we export Telnet to the AS/400. The router is about $700 and the ISP charges us $65/month for 250 hours which covers M-F and some weekend time. It's $1/hour after 250. The connection to the ISP is a two channel ISDN which the local phone company charges $80/month. BTW, the router eliminated the need for a ISDN modem. This is a SOHO offering to sites with less than 20 phone lines. The remote users are running Mocha Soft TN5250 ($25/seat .... $250 unlimited license) The traffic is low enough that it serves our needs. At any one point in time we will have about 6 people connected. We have noticed that certain times of the day some larger companies are sucking bandwidth out of the net but it usually doesn't last for more than 15 minutes and it's on a predictable schedule. The ISP offering is intending for a network to have outbound access to the internet and works very well for that purpose. The router will disconnect if there is no activity to stop the meter from running and comes back alive in about 3 seconds. The problem we ran into is the router does not wake up fast enough for inbound traffic so we keep the router awake during business hours by doing a ping to a list of outside servers. HTH, James W.
