Endre,

While I am not up on the various machines available and at what price,
two things come to my mind:

1. How many students?

2. How will they access the machine?
        a. All at the same time?
        b. What will they be doing? "only RPG?"

You will know the answers to the above and if, the number of students
is reasonable and they will be connected in such a way that does
involve all of them at the same time, your initial solution would
probably be just fine.

If the cappa wants to go big however perhaps you can sell the idea of
using the machine for other business needs and retire whatever you
have now. If you can justify the existance of the bigger solution you
wont be disappointed.
Keep in mind that solution B @50k will also do the COBOL/BASIC/C etc
and you could expand your offerings to include more AS/400 related
training such as CL DB2 perhaps CICS / Rexx. The possibilities are
there to utilize solution B, you just need to get to a manageble ROI.

Another possibility (just remembering my time in school) you can have
your best and brightest working on converting what you have now to the
400. "Nothing beats real world experience".

 <<Seeking your considered opinion.........>>

Hello all:

I am seeking the considered opinion of this list, re this situation:

I work ( part-time at) at a vocational school, where we teach computer
programming
(intro - basic - c - cobol, etc).

I proposed to add RPG /400 and IV to our current syllabus - idea
well
received. I
even proposed a small (used) 400 to be used for RPG, using existing
PCs as
workstations.

But:

The President (owner) consulted with one of his friends , who just
happens
to be an
IBM bussiness partner - and this guy suggested (and quoted) a machine
for over
$ 50,000, and this figure is just murdering my project.

In the opinon of all you Sages, what would be the really minimum
configuration to
propose and fight for ?

Thanks to all of you

EndreE
