David,

Cornerstone Communications (Fax Server/401) currently supports V3R1
thru V4R3.

The first thing that must happen to raise the bar is IBM must drop
support for the release.

And then it depends. For instance, IBM is dropping support for V3R1 &
V3R6 fairly soon. Plus, V3R1 is not Y2K. So we will most likely also
drop support for it in early 2000. One thing that makes this one
easier is that it does not require a version upgrade for the customer
so it does not cost anything (well, except for a shipping charge and
any consulting fee's to actually do the upgrade).

We do tend to support an OS release long past when people should be
using it.

The last time we raised the bar was November of 1997. Then it went
from V2R3 to V3R1. And we still on occasion get a request for V2Rx!

But then we sell to both large and small shops. Everything from the
main IS contact is really the AR clerk to installations having hundreds
of IS'rs.

Everytime you drop support for a release, you shrink your potential
client base. And we don't like doing that.

Of course, sometimes technical issues override marketing, but not very
often.
