You can effectively only use them with RPG IV, but don't let that stop you! RPG IV is NOT ILE: you can easily pick up RPG IV and be extremely productive very very quickly. Use the CVTRPGSRC command to convert one of your RPG/400 programs to the new syntax and have at it! Right away you'll have access to: Native dates, long variable/record/file names, prototyped procedures (thanks Hans!!!) and pointers. Dates and long variable names alone make the transition worth it...
