  • Subject: SCSI Tape Cable problem during conversion from AS/400-300 to Model 170

Hello all:

I just converted one of Hawaii's largest companies from a 300 to a model
170. It was interesting because I couldn't do an MES upgrade to the
hardware--only the software. We configured a 2729 SCSI for the 7208 tape
drive and also got a 1/4 inch 13 gb cartridge drive.

The machine arrived and lo and behold-the ultra-wide SCSI attachment was
not compatible with the older 50 pin SCSI connection! A re-check of the
configurator showed no way to preplan this!

The 39.99 part may or may not work--we couldn't risk it. The client gets to
pay almost $200 for a 4 meter cable between the 7208 and the model 170.

The effect is that the CISC to RISC conversion would have to be delayed or
we'd have to convert many gegabytes from 8mm to 1/4 inch on somebody else's
machine. Not a happy thought with a large company!

Ultimately, we did 95% of the CISC to RISC conversion through SNADS. We
only needed to convert the SAVSECDTA items, QGPL, and QUSRSYS in order to
start the conversion. The manual was minimal help in this situation!

Soooo, the moral of this short story is: (1) Make sure that you get the
proper cable, when converting SCSI attached devices from the Advances
Series Hardware to any PCI architecture; and (2) The CISC to RISC manual
may be great for some but it is NOT A REPLACEMENT for using your head when
things don't work exactly as planned.
