Folks: There's nothing that can be done regarding vacation autoresponders on this end of the pipe. Those messages are generated by the MAIL SYSTEM of the person who is (hopefully) enjoying some (hopefully) well deserved time off. Some mail systems are not smart enough to know that certian messages are not supposed to be autoresponded to. You'll noticed that, in ever list message, there is a header directeive called "Precidense" (sp?) that has a value of "Bulk". This should tell the mail system not to bounce soft errors. In addition, the mail systems should be bouncing messages back to the SENDER not the author of the message (sender being me, author being YOU). Sorry, IBM'ers... but Notes & cc:Mail are some of the worst offenders when it comes to not knowing when it should keep quite :) If you have any pull with the Lotus developers ... tell 'em to put in a better internet email engine (Notes & cc:Mail use a similar system). david > >>> <DAsmussen@aol.com> 08/26/98 02:18am >>> > > > Yes, and some of this has come from people that turned on > > "auto-responders" on their e-mail prior to leaving for vacation or > > other reasons. As another alternative: use > the filtering available in most Email packages, particularly since > SPAM has become a major issue (no, that does NOT imply this list > qualifies as SPAM :)) I have a particular rule that I turn on while on > vacation. It scans the message text for the words "MAJORDOMO" or > "MIDRANGE-L," which appear in the trailer appended to every list > generated message. When the words are found, the message is > deleted without reading or replying (sorry, but wading through > 250+ Emails upon return from vacation is not my idea of fun :)). This > rule is placed in front of the more typical "auto-respond while on > vacation" rule and volia - the list gets no auto generated traffic from > me (at least I don't think it does - I've never seen hundreds of replies > from me appear on the list, but maybe David intercepts them???) while > everybody else gets the "Sorry I'm not here" response. > > Just a thought > > Scott Cornell > Mercy Information Systems > +--- > | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! > | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. > | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. > | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. > | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com > +--- > +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
