From what they told me, you build a model of the system, which then is used to generate the application. In instances where the data model changes, the entire database is apparently imported into the new structure. This was a show stopper for us, because we didn't feel that it would be possible to regenerate the system within an acceptable length of time. While this severe limitation has probably been removed by now, I'm fairly confident that when you are changing a Genexus system, you are not mucking around in the real live execution code. I've been wrong before though.
