Pete, 

Actually, I'd bet that RPG does know this. If you create an RPG program
that does it's output using o-specs and not the write opcode I'd bet
that you got the "correct" default date (provided you didn't reference
the date field in the o-spec). After all, if you use the write statement
you are writing a value for the date field, even if you don't intend to.

Unless you specify something different, the current date is supposed to
be the default value for date fields. Unfortunately, RPG doesn't seem to
know this, but apparently SQL does.
