It sounds like you're planning to just connect the printer by remote output queue support. The 6400 does, I believe, have an IPDS option, which will allow you to connect by running a CRTDEVPRT command, and will give you full control over printing including full error recovery to the page level. See the article 'Industrial-Strength Printing with TCP/IP' by Bill Shaffer in the December/97 issue of News/400 (page 120).
