We have implemented Infinium and Showcase. From a product functionality Access and Showcase have a lot of similarities. What Showcase is, is it is very AS/400 aware. You will a lot of granularity and integration with the AS/400 for operational and security issues. The minus' for Showcase are 1.) cost per client 2.) the Infinium security is an additional software module from Infinium, I believe it cost us $7000. I don't know the pricing structure and if it is dependent on tiering or the like. The plus' for Showcase are 1.) extremely AS/400 aware 2.) pretty easy to use 3.) very flexible report writer 4.) our customer's are pleased as punch. While I am familiar with MS Access, I hesitate to compare between the two since we did not evaluate Showcase on this basis. jomullins@ovec.com on 06/02/98 09:44:09 AM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com cc: (bcc: Mike Crump/IS/Ball-Foster) Subject: Using PC software to report on Infinium Software's DB2 files The company I work for has recently purchased and implemented most of Infinium Software's modules. We use Reflection for IBM for Windows NT version 6.01 for terminal emulation. We are receiving requests to make available to PC software packages, such as MS Access or Showcase Strategy, the AS/400 data for reporting purposes. It is my understanding that Showcase has the capability to use the Infinium security model for data access. Our company is VERY conscientious about data security. What kind of issues and/or problems will we encounter with a setup such as this? We already have users building MS Access applications that they want data from the AS/400 loaded into and have demonstrated them to management. As you know, a GUI application looks and feels much better to managers than the "Green Screens". Additionally, we have purchased, but not yet implemented, Infinium's Desktop interface. We are new to both the AS/400 and Infinium worlds. Our IS department consists of 4 employees. Management has requested input from IS concerning the AS/400 to PC solution. Any information, especially about data security risks, would be most helpful. +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
