The D spec DOES allow the use of like() to define numeric variable, we do it everyday. Our standard is to define every field in the D spec using like() everytimes itmake sense. We also have a standard of defining every numeric fields as zoned (non packed). To do this, the external data definition is done using an external DS and the keyword prefix (to make sure the named are unique). Refering to the field of a DS instead of a file solves the packed/zoned problem. Denis Robitaille Cascades inc. Why not use *LIKE DEFN? Hans, This discussion WAS about ILE RPG. The problem was (is?) that the D spec does not allow the for specifying the storage type for a numeric field when the declaration uses Like() in order to base the field on an external data definition. This was a very frustrating limitation in V3R1 (my last significant RPG development project). Has this been changed?
