The info I received from all the gracious folks on the list regarding 
multiformat 
logical files was the perfect solution until today when I found out that not 
all the 
sites are moving from a System 36 to an AS/400 at the same time. Some will stay 
on the 
36 for awhile. The very sticky problem is that some files are shared by sites. 
Those 
sites that are not upgrading now need the multiple record type files and the 
sites that 
are upgrading need the multiformat logicals with separate physical files. They 
do not 
want to run in the 36 environment on the AS/400. Are there any other options?
