You can do this but it's a relative hassle because to do sync in a PC you
need it to be attached to an SDLC card in the PC.  For dual use
(sync/async) you need to have an A/B switch from the modem with A to the
sync card and B to the serial port.  Not really a great situation.

Since the SDLC resource on the AS/400 is what you have to dial in to, I
recommend that you go with a Hayes Optima voice/data modem with the
autosync feature.  This allows you to do both async and sync from one
PCMCIA, internal ISA, or external model.  

You can get all your async stuff (BBS, Internet, etc.) directly from the PC
and still get your sync stuff via autosync emulation software (ie:  Synapse
WinAPPC, http://www.synapse.com).  This will autodial your AS/400 (ECS
line?) SDLC resource, connect, and display signon display.  Voila!
