  • Subject: Netsoft router failure - MS universal logon

All techniphoebies,

This is so good I have to share it.

One of my customers has 1 out of 3 HP Vectra's working fine connected via
Synapse WinAPPC and NS Router via Netware for SAA to an AS/400. Not a bad
percentage but....

Talked to Netsoft today about it and a very helpful tech person told me
about an obscure situation that could affect anyone using the Netsoft
router over any physical/protocol link.

A Windows 95 feature called universal logon will actually talk to the
winsock.dll irregardless whether you are attaching via IP or not (any
protocol or connection).

The NS Router will deliver an error message roughly like this:

"Netsoft router has failed to initialize, check the event viewer for details."

The event viewer refers to "error 20 which says that there is no physical
connection."

This only happens where the MS winsock.dll is overwritten with supposedly
winsock compliant stacks (in this case by a Bay Networks winsock).

Beware! If any application overwrites your winsock you may be vulnerable
to this error. What is winsock compliant anyway?
