Sorry Don - have no direct experience using AutoSync modems.
Some guys in our Newfoundland office have had problems using to connect
to an Advanced/36, but they worked fine on a connection to an AS/400
under OS/400 control.

You could also put a 2-port 5308 Protocol Converteter on the Adv/36 (or
an old used 5208 if you can dig one up cheap), connected to a twinax
port, and use any standard Async terminal emulator to connect in various
modes (VT100, VT220, Wyse, 3151, etc).
