  • Subject: OSI model

My users (internal customers) and management (because our internal
customer expectations have not been met) are screaming due to poor
response times on various AS/400 and/or network platforms. While we
currently have our corporate LAN with 2 remote LANs connected through a
frame-relay WAN, we are now looking to move some "local" corporate
office space offsite, sharing a "local" LAN.

Does this sound familiar?

I am in the process of putting together a "laymens" terms version of the
OSI model. This is being done to explain the layering involved in
achieving acceptable computer response times. I do not want to over
complicate the issue but simply want them to understand that ... giving
them a Pentium Pro on their desktop with 48 MB memory with Windows 98
may not solve all their ills! Being "somewhat" more managerial than
technical, any and all feedback would be welcome.

If you can provide me with your translations for the OSI model, I would
be more than happy to provide you with the "sum total" received and
perhaps an analogy for senior management.

TIA
