If you are going to reengineer your database the first thing I would do is to forget DDS for data files. DDS is one of the most archaic features left on the AS/400. Go with one of the many modern SQL based data modeling tools such as ERwin(by Logic Works) to design, create, and maintain your database. Creating and maintaining a complex database, complete with referential integrity constraints and triggers, takes days with a modeling tool, as compared to weeks if not months if using DDS and DB2/400 commands. And DDS provides virtually no documentation in regard to relationships, foreign keys, etc. The issues you raised are non-issues if using a data modeling tool.
