We did this too.
And we use a small module with two print functions:
pprintf(printfile, ....) and
pprintf_formfeed(printfile...)
to handle print i/o as easy as i/o to stdin/stdout.
No one has to care about the technical details,
i.e. putting a blank before a normal line and
writing a "1" to get a formfeed...

I could only get the formfeed to work by using a print file that had the 
CTLCHAR(*FCFC) and used the first caracter in the buffer being written to
handle the forms control data to produce a formfeed.
