I've checked with development on the question of the line-feeds. No one seems to be able to remember just why the compiler does things the it the way it does, but there is at least one piece of documentation on the subject. In Chapter 8 of the C Programmer's Guide there is a 'Using Printer Files' heading. While it doesn't specifically mention the form feed, it does say to create a printer file with FCFC, and use the (first byte you write) codes in the Printer Device Programming manual.
