You missed my point entirely.

I'd like to know:
a) what does C600 434B mean (NOT what does C6xx 4xxx mean) and
b) why are there two automatic IPL's to the A-Side even though the docs only
    mention one.

When you quoted my question you dropped the crucial sentence which was:

When I installed the last tape the machine IPL'd from to the A-side up to
C900 2967 (the ptf install source), then did another IPL to the A-side up to
C600 434B where it 'crunched' for a long time, then another, finally to the
B-side, again with a lengthy stopover at C900 2967 and finally a signon screen.

I'm not 'worried' something could be wrong, I'd like to know what is happening
and
why.

In regards to b) there was some speculation that the second A-side IPL was
needed to apply permanent PTF's. Is this possible?
I was under the impression that permanently applying a PTF means applying it
to the A-side as well as the B-side. Therefore I would think that the machine
would have to IPL off the B-side to apply PTF's to the A-side.
Can anyone shed some light?

Regards,
Matthias
