The true answer is that, it depends on the speed of the media you want, vs. the speed and size of your system. It can be out of proportion. IBM won't sell tape drives, unless they meet certain quality standards, and many of the PC class tape drives won't. For low end systems, two comments: - 1/4 inch is relatively slow and highly reliable - 8mm is also slow, but not highly reliable The term reliable has to do with restore. All these things save real good, it's just restore can be a problem. (Maybe this isn't a big problem, because we typically save many more times than we restore!).
