I may have missed the reason in an earlier post but can you not use the CL cmds
for setting  & getting environment vars. These can be passed to submitted jobs
by setting CPYENVVAR(*YES) on the SBMJOB cmd. 

Ooops, forget that, the env-vars are also limited to 1024.
