When I first started here, we had an E80 named Goliath and a B45 named David. At some point we brought in a third AS/400 (F25) from a company we had bought out. After a short but enthusiastic voting process the F25 was re-christened TheRock (as in David slew Goliath with...). Eventually, our development systems were moved to the F25 and the B45 was retired. In '96, we moved to two RISC boxes, a 530 and 50S, which retained our system names of Goliath and TheRock. I know someone else who named their 400 Kramer (as in Cosmo), and yet another who had their 38 named poobear. I think naming the machines with a "friendly" name helps the users relate to them much better than "S1102003", not to mention the friendly names are much easier to say. The only problem is that you must have a management that has a sense of humor.
