I do not know the history of this *DTAARA, but can assure you that the formal support for accessing the VRM of packaged software (OS/400 being just one example) is to use the API. Unless the *DTAARA becomes a formal documented interface (as the API is) then usage of the *DTAARA within applications is basically a user beware situation.
