I'm sure that Neil will be forthcoming with a PTF :-D, but I would suggest
the following in the meantime:

1)  Initialize the tape on your 3xx machine (ALWAYS go from lower to higher
when you are dealing with possibly incompatible hardware) prior to the save.
2)  Make sure that your SAVxxx command on the 5xx machine specifies
TGTRLS(V3R2Mx) to match your system (NOT a mere *PRV, which would be V3R6).
3)  Do you have multiple 8mms?  Are they the same model?  Are both boxes in
your office?  If so, consider selling one, setting up communications between
the two boxes, and establishing the tape as a virtual device from the machine
to which it is not attached...
